January: After the Rain, Before the Next Storm

by Deanna Deckard

🏡 Solano County Home Maintenance Tips

While the sun is finally shining ☀️ across Solano County, many neighborhoods are still drying out—and there’s a good chance we’ll see more rain before the season fully wraps up. January is the perfect time to check how your home handled recent storms and make small adjustments before the next system rolls through.

January Home Focus Areas:

✔️ Walk your property for lingering moisture
Check side yards, crawl space vents, and shaded areas for standing water or muddy soil. Homes in Vallejo, Fairfield, and older parts of Benicia often reveal drainage issues after the rain clears.

✔️ Inspect gutters & downspouts (again) 🌧️
Even if you cleaned them earlier, wind and rain may have loosened debris. Make sure downspouts are directing water well away from the foundation.

✔️ Check interior humidity
Condensation on windows or musty smells can signal excess moisture. Run bathroom fans, crack windows on dry days, and consider a dehumidifier if needed.

✔️ Review your roof—visually
From the ground, look for displaced shingles, flashing gaps, or debris buildup. Catching minor issues now can prevent leaks during the next storm.

🏠 Real Estate Tie-In:
Homes that show good drainage and moisture control tend to perform better in inspections and appraisals—especially during rainy seasons.
