Where to See Wildflowers Bloom in Northern California This Spring

by Deanna Deckard

Chase the colors of the season!

Spring in Northern California means wildflowers—and lots of them! From golden poppies to purple lupines, here are the best spots to catch the bloom in full swing:

1. North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve (Oroville) 🌼
This volcanic plateau turns into a wildflower wonderland from late March to April. Expect carpets of goldfields, lupines, and owl’s clover—with waterfalls like Phantom Falls adding a magical touch.  The California Department of Fish and Wildlife provides information on visiting and current conditions.

2. Point Reyes National Seashore 🌊🌸
Wildflowers and ocean views? Yes, please! Head to Chimney Rock or Tomales Point to spot Douglas iris, poppies, and seaside daisies swaying in the salty breeze. The National Park Service offers seasonal wildflower information and updates. MK Library

3. Carrizo Plain National Monument 🌾🌈
While technically Central California, it's worth the drive. In years past, a “super bloom” has blanketed the plains in vibrant yellows, oranges, and purples. This year has been drier, so a super bloom may be unlikely.  The Bureau of Land Management provides updates on wildflower conditions. March through April is peak time.

4. Mount Diablo State Park (Contra Costa County) 🏞️🌻
Mitchell Canyon is your go-to for spring blooms like Indian paintbrush, globe lilies, and fiddlenecks. Bonus: epic views from the summit! The Mount Diablo Interpretive Association maintains a Wildflower Guide with current blooming information.

5. Lassen Volcanic National Park πŸŒ‹πŸ’
Higher elevation means a later bloom (May–July), but the wait is worth it. Lupine, paintbrush, and mule’s ear pop against dramatic volcanic backdrops. The National Park Service provides details on wildflower bloom times and locations.
